On March 18th, Northport, NY-based podcast History Straight Up will participate in its first Podcasthon, the largest charity event in the podcasting world. The global initiative brings together podcasters from across the industry to spotlight nonprofit organizations and inspire listeners to learn about, and support, meaningful causes.

Since we started History Repeatn’ in 2024, we’ve been dedicated to supporting important causes,” said Carol Taylor, co-host of History Straight Up. “With the growing reach of History Straight Up, we now have an even bigger platform to continue doing so.

As part of the event, History Straight Up is dedicating a special episode to Paws of War, a Long Island–based nonprofit that supports veterans, first responders, and rescued animals.

Founded with a mission of healing on both ends of the leash, Paws of War pairs veterans and first responders with rescue animals, creating powerful partnerships that help people and animals recover together. The organization also assists with service dog training, rescue operations, and critical support services for those who have served.

We’ve learned a lot so far on our journey through history on History Straight Up. While researching this episode, we were saddened to learn that, in the past, many military working dogs who stood beside service members often risked their lives without recognition.

Staying true to the podcast’s mission to “stumble through history,” the special episode turns its attention to the remarkable legacy of military working dogs and K-9 units. From battlefield scouts to modern detection dogs, the episode explores the courage and loyalty of animals that have played vital roles in military and public safety operations.

We’ve learned a lot so far on our journey through history on History Straight Up,” said Pete Gallo, co-host of the podcast. “While researching this episode, we were saddened to learn that, in the past, many military working dogs who stood beside service members often risked their lives without recognition.

Listeners will also hear from Mike Kilano, a veteran and Paws of War’s Veteran Resource Coordinator. In the episode, Kilano shares insight into the organization’s work and the profound impact that rescued animals can have on the lives of those coping with the challenges of military service and emergency response careers.

By sharing these stories of heroic war dogs and the work of Paws of War, we hope listeners not only learn something new about history, but also feel inspired to support a mission that changes lives on both ends of the leash,” said John N. Daniello, co-host of History Straight Up.

The episode, titled “War Dogs,” will be released on March 18th as part of Podcasthon’s worldwide campaign to amplify charitable causes. Listeners can hear the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, and all major podcast platforms.
